Workout tracking
Start, log, and finish
Open Train to choose or edit a routine, or begin a freestyle workout. During a session, edit the weight and reps for each set, then mark performed sets complete. Finish and save the session to add it to your history.
Correct a set
During an active workout, edit the set again or uncheck it. Warm-ups and unchecked sets are excluded from training volume and estimated strength records. For a saved session, open it in Progress → History, then choose Workout options → Edit workout. Review your changes before saving.
Change units
In Settings, choose kilograms or pounds. Historical values are retained; changing units changes their presentation.
Body weight
Log a dated entry from Today or the Body view in Progress. Saving another entry on the same date replaces that day’s measurement. The trend uses a seven-day average of available entries; missing days are not treated as zero.
Resume an unfinished workout
Your active session is saved locally. Reopen the app to resume. The rest timer uses its saved end time.
Backup & restore
The journal is local by default and is excluded from automatic iCloud/device backups. Export a copy or enable optional encrypted cloud backup before changing or erasing your phone.
Export a file
Open Settings → Export data and save the JSON file somewhere you control. Exports contain readable training data.
Restore a file
Choose Settings → Restore data, select a Workout Pal JSON file, and confirm. Restoring replaces the current journal and preserves a local copy first. For another app’s export, use Import workouts instead of Restore data.
Import another app’s export
Open Settings → Import workouts, choose a file, and review the preview and warnings before adding it. Import supports selected openGym backup, Strong/Hevy/FitNotes CSV, body-weight CSV, and Apple Health XML formats. If a file cannot be read, the app shows an error; review all import warnings before continuing. Import adds data instead of replacing your current journal. Matching workouts are skipped, and an existing body-weight entry wins for the same day.
Choose whether to keep the original file in the preview. Retention preserves unsupported information and is off by default for Apple Health imports. It may contain more information than the app displays and can be included in JSON exports and encrypted backup. Review the file’s contents before importing. The import screen offers Undo after an import; save a separate export before making major changes.
Enable encrypted backup
Open Settings → Cloud backup and enable Encrypted cloud backup. Use Show recovery key and keep the key in a password manager. Anyone with that key can restore or delete the backup. We cannot recover a lost key.
Restore with a recovery key
Open the backup screen, paste the key under Moving from another iPhone?, and choose Restore with recovery key. Check the confirmation carefully: restoring replaces the journal on that phone.
If a backup fails or reports a conflict
Your local journal remains available. Export a local copy, check your connection, and try again. A conflict means the service has a newer revision; it refuses to overwrite it. Save an export before choosing which journal to restore. This service does not merge changes across devices.
Account sync
Account sync is an optional service, separate from recovery-key backup. It uses a passkey and synchronizes completed training data; your active workout stays on this phone. Routines and logging remain available locally without an account.
Sync protects data in transit with HTTPS, but the service can read the synchronized journal. For a copy encrypted on your iPhone, use recovery-key backup instead. See Privacy for the data stored by each option.
Signing out stops this device's session. Sign out of all devices to revoke every session. Keep a local export before deleting or replacing training data.
Delete your data
Delete a cloud backup
In the backup screen, choose Delete cloud backup and confirm. Your journal on the phone stays in place. Turning backup off or deleting the app alone does not delete a stored cloud backup.
Remove local data
Delete individual sessions from history. To remove the entire local journal, delete the app and its data from iPhone Settings. Delete any cloud backup first if you want to remove that copy too, and remove exported files separately. Keychain recovery credentials can persist after app deletion.
If you use Account sync, deleting that account removes its synchronized journal, passkeys, sessions, and pairing records. Your local data and any separate recovery-key backup remain. If you need help, contact support without including your recovery key or journal.
Reminders & iPhone features
Open Settings → Reminders, choose your reminders, then tap Allow notifications. If permission was denied, use the link to iPhone Settings. No notification permission is requested on launch.
Completed sessions and logged weigh-ins suppress that day’s related reminder. The current schedule covers the next 14 days and refreshes when you use the app. iPhone notification settings and Focus can affect delivery.
